“Take the rod; and you and your brother Aaron assemble the congregation and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it may yield its water” (Numbers 20:8).
Seeking God’s counsel, as to how they should deal with the grumbling of the thirsty crowd, Moses was given a specific directive; that it might be, yet, another sign of God’s continuing grace and faithful provision. Instead, Moses spoke harshly to the people and struck the rock. Yes, water came forth, but don’t be fooled by appearances. God gives his word to messengers that it might be obediently spoken. Moses’ disobedience, however, made the messenger the focal point instead of the message.
