“Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s” (Matthew 22:21).
The denarius brought to Jesus bore the image of the Roman emperor. Because the coin was created by Caesar for Caesar, Caesar was entitled to receive what rightly belongs to him. The fullness of his visual lesson is accomplished with the knowledge that we, as humankind, bear the image of God. It’s a word about Creator, ownership and, thus, our expected allegiance.
