“But the sons of Israel acted unfaithfully in regard to the things under the ban, for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, took some of the things under the ban, therefore the anger of the Lord burned against the sons of Israel” (Joshua 7:1).
Within the community of faith, our lives, deeds, and even our sins are inextricably woven together in a symbiotic relationship. None of us exist on an island unto ourselves. The sin of the one becomes the failure of the whole. The story of Achan is a reminder that it’s never just one particular sin of one particular person. It is a sin we all share in one form or another.
