“The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself, ‘I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector’” (Luke 18:11).

That the Pharisee was praying to himself certainly reveals the object of his true affections. Thus, by necessity the self-righteous and spiritually arrogant must constantly and pejoratively categorize people into “lesser” groups as to give themselves a more favorable evaluation. In contrast, it is only those who approach the throne of grace in humility and brokenness that receive it and are afforded true righteousness–the righteousness of Christ.
