“And He said to them, ‘You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of men, but God know your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable in the sight of God’” (Luke 16:15).

The religion of the Pharisees, a radically legalistic misrepresentation of the life of faith that must be surpassed if one is to enter the kingdom of heaven (Mt.5:20), is preoccupied with external expressions that seek to impress and garner the affirmations of man. This desire to gain the admiration of others, based upon the mockery of religious performance, is a fatal and nearsighted pursuit and falls short of a more freeing and farsighted view of life focused on living for an audience of One.
