“Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained Himself in all the Scriptures” (Luke 24:27).
Jesus cannot be rightly understood apart from Scripture. Like so many, Cleopas held to certain cultural beliefs about the messiah that were based upon nationalistic exclusivism and what would offer immediate gratification and, yet, had no scriptural basis. That his disciples might better understand him, Jesus offers no new visions or hyper-spiritual epiphanies from God but, rather, an age-old spiritual discipline–bible study. If the disciples who witnessed the resurrection of Jesus needed it, then how desperately do we?
