“‘Oh that there were one among you who would shut the gates, that you might not uselessly kindle fire on My altar! I am not pleased with you,’ says the Lord of hosts,‘nor will I accept an offering from you’” (Malachi 1:10).

It’s alarming to discover that God can grow so tiresome of the mocking expressions of worship offered by his people that he says they would be better off just shutting the doors to their place of worship. This occurs when we begin to think of worship in terms of our needs instead of God’s glory; our preferences instead of what pleases God; when we desire only to commemorate what God has done in the past instead of celebrating what he is doing today in the heart of a new generation.
