“I will show…I will make…I will bless…I will curse” (Genesis 12:1-3).
The assertions of God are a promising and refreshing contrast to the assertions of humanity that brought about such brokenness within the created order. What God calls us to leave behind (country, relatives, land, v.1) become the very things he promises to give us in the future — well-being, security, prominence, and prosperity. Faith, then, requires that we embrace with such passionate certainty the future God is promising; that we willingly give up the present offerings of the world. We are either going to trust in the deceiving systems of men for the present or the promising assertions of God for the future. It is impossible to live as if both are true.
