“Then God spoke all these words, saying, ‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery’” (Exodus 2:1-2).
Because of the prohibitive “You shall not” prefacing seven of the Ten Commandments, they are often viewed in a negative light. This preamble, however, reminds us that our heavenly Father is one longing for intimacy and relationship with his children. The initial recipients of these commandments would have considered them no more burdensome than you and I would parts of speech to a conversation. His action is always for our well-being and what is necessary to living well as a people uniquely called by him.
