“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” (Matthew 5:9).
Peacemaking is a work of Divine origin. To be called “sons of God” is to share in what God is doing in the world. “Sons of” is an ancient Palestinian idiom based upon the belief that a person’s actions are a reflection of their lineage. To wrongs suffered, real or imagined, the natural man desires to respond in kind — with violence, vitriol, and vengeance. We, however, because of our new birth in Christ Jesus, are empowered and genetically wired by the Holy Spirit to answer supernaturally by loving our enemies and praying for those who persecute you.
