“You will grieve, but your grief will be turned into joy” (John 16:20).
“But” is a word of transition filled with hope. Jesus isn’t saying that the painful circumstances of life will be replaced by something else. In fact, he says the very thing that brings pain will, itself, become the source of joy. This doesn’t mean we seek out pain, or manufacture hardship, but when life imposes upon us a cross that must be carried, it’s only as we embrace and own it, rather than compartmentalizing or hiding it, that we will ever appreciate the conclusion of joy that will be someday written into our pain filled narrative.
