“If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me” (Luke 9:23).
Taking up one’s cross isn’t a onetime event but a constant preoccupation in the life of a disciple. Translated into life it is both passive and active. Passively, cross-bearing endures the circumstances that bring suffering and hardship to our lives, knowing that how we respond is of eternal significance as others watch how we react to adversity. Actively, cross-bearing is the banner under which we live our lives and engage our world. Our attitude is not one of a wilting flower but a proactive presence for our Lord.
