“Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus” (John 11:5).

His love for Lazarus having already been affirmed in verse 3, the love that Jesus had for all three of these siblings is beyond question. Even so, the brokenness of this world does not exempt even those closest to Jesus from the heartache of grief, disappointment, and loss. In our deepest pain, the tendency is to retreat in isolation; thinking that we, alone, have known such a degree of pain. Yet, it’s never just us. It is also Him. It is into such a world as this that He has come to redeem; to resurrect our lives in ways never imagined.
