“Or do you suppose that those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them were worse culprits than all the men who live in Jerusalem? I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:4-5).
The rhetorical question raised by Jesus captured the very essence of their thinking. Such small-mindedness is the result of a person’s insecurities. It is a prevailing sense of inferiority that produces those who gossip, criticize, and judge. The diminishing of others becomes their passive/aggressive form of self-promotion. When the Day comes, God will never ask us to give an account of another; only ourselves. It’s only those who are failing in the task of taking care of their own business that have the time to concern themselves with the business of others.
