“And He had to pass through Samaria” (John 4:4).
While some would excuse their misdeeds with a dismissive, “The devil made me do it,” the faithful followers of the Lord Jesus Christ lead a Spirit based life that places upon us a sense of “ought-ness” as to how we should then live. That Jesus had to go through Samaria on the way to Galilee need not be understood only as being the most direct route. The imperfect, continuous, ongoing verb tense could indicate that this was something Jesus felt he had to do under the Spirit’s leading. Having just made the decree to Nicodemus that God so loved the world (3:16), his conversation and offer of living water to a Samaritan woman proved it to be so. Do not dismiss those “have to” moments the Lord places upon your heart. In these, lives are changed, and the ministry of His presence is performed.
