“She said, ‘No one, Lord.’ And Jesus said, ‘I do not condemn you, either’” (John 8:11a).
In his conversation with the woman taken in adultery, Jesus models the spirit of redemption declared in John 3:17 — that God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world. It is a quality consistently portrayed throughout the entirety of his earthly ministry, and it is this redeeming spirit that is to characterize his continuing ministry in the life and witness of the church — the body of Christ. While he was, and is, the only One with the power, and position, to rightly judge and condemn, he chose instead to forgive and redeem. Because he did, we must.
