“Surely every man walks about as a phantom; surely they make an uproar for nothing; he amasses riches and does not know who will gather them” (Psalm 39:6).

The purchase and gathering of “stuff” is a meaningless and mindless pursuit. A few years ago, after observing my wife’s involvement with a business that helped senior adults to downsize and relocate, I have sought to apply a new standard regarding the purchase of “things.” The question I ask is, “Will my children want this when I’m dead and gone?” Or, “Is this just another piece of junk that will require paying someone to haul it to the dump?” The temporal man chases temporal things, while the eternal man pursues eternal things and lays up treasures in heaven.
