“But He did not answer her a word. And His disciples came and implored Him, saying, ‘Send her away, because she keeps shouting at us’” (Matthew 15:23).
While perhaps unsettling, the silence of Jesus should never be interpreted as uncaring or indifference. Even with his own disciples, he lay silent and sleeping in the midst of a storm-tossed sea (Matthew 8). Periods of silence offer the opportunity for contemplation, reflection and, in this case, the Lord’s silence elevated the faith of this woman to a place for the church to forever see. Even his silence is accomplishing his purposes in our lives.
