“You serpents, you brood of vipers, how will you escape the sentence of hell” (Matthew 23:33)?
With the end of his life and ministry upon him, it’s shocking to hear Jesus offer the same assessment of the religious leaders as did John the Baptist three years prior (See Mt. 3:7). During this time frame, the guardians of religion have suspiciously observed Jesus’ highly visible public ministry. It’s unsettling to think that even with the miracles they witnessed, the actions of life-changing grace and mercy observed, and the profound teachings heard, evoked no change of heart. Their spiritual blindness, coupled with an unteachable spirit, places them in a wasteland beyond the redeeming mercies of God’s grace. Religion is a death sentence while faith gives life.
