A DUPLICITOUS INDICTMENT

“But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your wealth with prostitutes, you killed the fatted calf for him” (Luke 15:30).

Oddly enough, the only thing the text offers regarding the behavior of the younger prodigal is that he squandered his inheritance with loose living (v.13). This accusation of the elder brother would laughable were it not so revealing and indicting. Yes, he may have stayed home and obediently done as a son should, but we now know what he was thinking about while doing it. We most easily judge in others the very things we recognize in our own life. In so doing, we incriminate no one but ourselves.
