“Oh that I were as in months gone by…As I was in the prime of my days” (Job 29:1,4).
It’s human nature to look backward to what was; to some period, season, of personal preferences that have, in our own mind, been aggrandized and arrogantly deemed superior. Even so, human nature is the very thing we battle in the life of faith. Biblical faith, as opposed to sentimental, earthbound religion, understands that the “glory days” are before us, not behind us. The God who is making all things new, calls his people to let go and look ahead. As in the life of Abraham, faith goes forward to a place of not knowing. God’s providential purposes will trump our personal preferences every time.
