“Then the slave girl who kept the door said to Peter, ‘You are not also one of this man’s disciples, are you?’ He said, ‘I am not’” (John 18:17).

Having been told by Jesus that he would deny him three times, I’m confident Peter had galvanized himself for some big opportunity to stand up for his Lord; to prove, and fulfill the boastful statement that he would lay down his life for Jesus (John13:37). Little did he realize that major opportunities rarely come, only incidental moments in the presence of incidental people in the course of everyday life. It’s only as we seize such unremarkable occasions, with the conviction they are of enormous value, that the church can fulfill its missional task in the world as the presence of Christ.
