“Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, ‘One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me’” (Mark 10:21).
The affluent would never run or kneel before a lesser, but this rich young ruler did (v.17). Though he could have anything his world had to offer, he recognized Jesus as the source for what he longed most of all—eternal life. After listing for him his moral triumphs, he must have been thrilled when Jesus said he lacked just one thing. However, instead of listing another moral precept to be attained and marked off the list, Jesus touches the very pulse of this man’s existence. That’s what Jesus does; he loves us too much to compromise the message and accommodate our lives. He knows us well enough to know that it’s really just one thing that keeps us from giving up everything for Him (v.28).
