“Jesus answered, ‘Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times’” (John 13:38).
Having made the bold declaration he would lay down his life for Jesus (v.37), Peter is crushed into silence by Jesus’ prediction. Unforeseeably, decades later, Peter’s audacious assertion would, actually, come to pass; he would lay down his life. But that would be a different Peter; not this one so self-assured of his capabilities, but a man broken; humbled by life and ministry. Peter’s life is a vivid reminder that we either humble ourselves, or life will.
